FAQ's
What are the benefits of linen bedding?
- Temperature Regulation: It features hollow fibers that promote high airflow. This keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter, making it a popular choice for premium bedding.
- Moisture-Wicking: It can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture before even feeling damp. It dries rapidly, preventing bacterial and mold growth.
- Extreme Durability: Linen is twice as durable as cotton. While it feels slightly crisp or textured initially, it contains natural pectin that breaks down over time, meaning it gets softer with every single wash.
Does linen soften over time?
- Pectin Breakdown: Raw flax fibers are bound together by a natural compound called pectin. Regular washing and friction break down these microscopic bonds, causing the fabric to lose its initial stiffness.
- Fiber Suppleness: Unlike cotton fibers which can fray and degrade over time, linen fibers become suppler and smoother as they are agitated, resulting in a fluid, lived-in drape.
How do I wash linen?
- Set to Gentle Cycle: Use the gentle, delicate, or wool cycle on your washing machine. High agitation can stress the flax fibers.
- Choose Cool Water: Wash in cold or lukewarm water (maximum 30°C to 40°C). Hot water can cause linen to shrink and weaken the threads.
- Load the Machine Lightly: Give linen plenty of space to move around. Overcrowding the drum causes twisting, stretching, and excessive creasing.
- Use Mild Liquid Detergent: Select a gentle, liquid detergent free of optical brighteners. Never use bleach, which destroys the natural flax fibers.
- Skip Fabric Softener: Avoid chemical softeners entirely. They coat the fabric in a residue that reduces its natural breathability and moisture-wicking properties. [The Drying Process
- Air Dry When Possible: Hang your linen flat or on a line out of direct sunlight. This is the best way to prevent shrinkage and keep the fabric strong.
- Tumble Dry with Caution: If using a dryer, select a low heat, delicate setting. Remove the linen while it is still slightly damp to prevent it from becoming brittle or deeply wrinkled.
- Use Wool Dryer Balls: Toss a few wool dryer balls (or tennis balls!) into the machine. The physical agitation helps soften the linen naturally without chemicals.
